Friday 22 September
Sadly there has been more rain overnight so our packing up is somewhat soggy. We head off south to Santa Maria de Feira where we find a good Mercado supermarket for provisions. It’s still rather grey and overcast so the town and castle don’t look very appealing although we do have a bit of a wander. Onwards to Ovar which is much prettier with many tiled houses and a rose garden. It is the home of the Pao de Lo cakey pudding that I had in Porto. Then to the beach at Fouradouro where we admire the vast expanse of beach and sand dunes with the large waves being whipped by the wind. We drive along the Ria de Aveiro delta, a vast wetland where fishermen head out in traditional wooden fishing boats. We see flamingos and for once have our binoculars to hand. Our campsite is in a pine forest a little further down the coast and we manage to find a nice large sunny pitch for once. After a late lunch of bread and cheese we cycle 2km to the beach where we read in the evening sunshine.
