Monday 18 September

We wake before sunrise uncertain of the time. We’re so close to the Spanish border that even our iPhones are confused and read an hour apart! We settle for a bit longer in bed. It’s a bit cloudy so we decide to cycle into the centre of Caminha to explore and get provisions. There is still a stream of pilgrims doing the Portuguese Camino to Santiago and one option is a taxi ferry across the Rio Minho to Spain. The central square has a fountain, Church, bell and clock tower with some cobbled streets and buildings adorned with colourful ceramic tiles which we suspect will become more and more familiar. We have a coffee and our first Pastel de Nata….of many I hope! Bread and cheese lunch by the van and then the weather improves so we head to the nearby beach which is less windy than yesterday and we even manage to sunbathe and read books for a while. We return to the beach later for supper: Simon fries sausages on his portable grill as we watch the sun setting.
