Saturday 16 September
It rained quite a lot in the night but we’re relieved not to wake up in a quagmire. Breakfast outside as usual. The campsite is a bit like a ghost town. Packed with caravans and awnings plus en suite facilities but mostly deserted. Rather an end of season sort of feeling. The forecast is not great so we decide to walk equipped with waterproofs. We find a scenic boardwalk and path that hugs the rugged coast lined with pink granite rocks and boulders. It’s mainly dry and we enjoy a good 3 hours out and back before lunch back at base. The sun is even trying to come out. Sadly with the sun seems to come the wind and we get rather sandblasted trying to find a sheltered spot on the beach. We settle nearer to the harbour and are entertained by a gathering of old traditional sailing boats on the beach. A couple of boats sail in a rather precarious fashion otherwise there is a lot of clapping, blowing on conch shells and bagpipes. Sails seem to go up and then down and eventually they pack away. We wonder if it’s the end of season prize giving. We’re planning to eat out this evening by the beach. If we can stave off the hunger until 8.45pm!
