Sunday 10 and Monday 11 September
Lunch in the garden at Tarrywood with Mum and Ellie en route to Plymouth. The Brittany Ferries check in is very busy but after a bit of shuffling and queuing we’re on board and we leave on time. We enjoy the comfort of our Deluxe cabin and go on deck to watch Devon disappear. We meet Nick and Sally Rimmer on board on their way to their villa in southern Spain. Good supper in the restaurant with lots of prawns in the buffet. I’m a bit sedated from my antiemetics: totally unneeded as it is like a mill pond the whole way! A good night, continental breakfast in our cabin and then reading on the sunny deck. A short drive to San Vincente de La Barquaira where we try to park unsuccessfully to buy provisions. The Spanish Vuerta (Tour de France) is coming through here tomorrow and it’s rammed. We park over the bridge and cycle in with our panniers. Our campsite is rural with views of the Picos mountains although the pitch is already very muddy and the clouds look threatening. We get set up and then the heavens open and we’re in a quagmire! The German next door is digging a trench! We eat our bread and cheese and Rioja in the van watching the rain.
