Thursday 21 September

It rained most of the night with strong winds and so it was a noisy night up in the top tent bunk. So a soggy start to the day. I get some milk from the shop and talk to another South African/ Portuguese lady who left SA because of the violence there. Once an accountant she now runs the camp shop and gets up at 5 every day to get to work on the site.

We get the bus and metro into Porto this time travelling over the Luis 1 bridge to Gaia where all the famous port manufacturers have warehouses. There are beautiful views over the Douro towards Porto on the north side of the river. We take a cable car down to the river level and walk around the Gaia area. Then we walk over the bridge to Ribiera. More photo opportunities.

For lunch we head to Café Santiago for Francesinha the Porto specialty. Not for the faint hearted it is a white bread sandwich with steak, 2 types of sausage, ham , cheese with an egg on top and chips and soaked in a heavy beer gravy. It is surprisingly delicious.

We have a glass of white port back in the Balhão market amongst the salt cod and sardines before making our way back home by metro and bus which again is crammed with young students and so there is standing room only.
