Sunday 8 October

Alarm at 7:30 and the sun doesn’t rise for another hour. Fantastic stars in the clear Picos skies.

We drive along the narrow twisty road to Cain hoping not to meet anything coming the other way. We manage to park at Cain and start the Cares Gorge walk. We are pretty much the only ones doing it in this direction. After a while we soon meet streams of early starters from Poncebos.  Beautiful walk and scenery, a few mountain goats on the way.

We get to Poncebos after about 2 and half hours of walking. We stop for coffee and doughnut and don’t linger for long and head back along the route, up the steep section in full sun. It’s very hot.  We yearn for some shade. I keep dipping my hat in springs to cool my head down. We drink nearly 2 litres , replenishing from nearby springs.

Back to Cain at 3:30 ish and the dreaded drive back. We only meet one vehicle. We are very dusty from the trek so the shower and cool down is most welcome. We are planning to eat in the camp restaurant tonight.
